Afro-Indigenous individuals, with roots in Sub-Saharan Africa and Indigenous America, embody rich histories and cultures shaped by the African diaspora and Indigenous heritage. Our experiences reflect the intersections of racism, colonialism, and resilience. Reclaiming indigeneity is empowering—I am the daughter of West Africa’s original inhabitants and the Indigenous peoples of North America’s Piedmont Region.

To my Afro-Indigenous community: our resilience, strength, and cultural contributions are invaluable. Embrace our dual heritage and its beauty. Despite challenges, our magic shines, inspiring unity and diversity. Celebrate our identities, amplify our voices, and continue to represent and inspire.

My “Essence” needed this experience. The cast and crew had thought provoking conversations that allowed us to develop an organic bond and enhance the story line, as well. In particular, late night discussions were a form of therapy for all of us. Yes, Gaby, we will manifest what’s for our highest good. And so it is!!!…Night Night. 😁 Additionally, who does the “Electric Slide” to “Maria Maria” by Carlos Santana?!?!?! We do, that’s who! 🤣🤣🤣 With that being said, this project was bigger than all of us. All of our seeds have been planted, and now it’s harvest time. As was said in the film by Quannacut (Silent Wind), “We should do this more often…”
