Unity - Cockacoeske's Dilemma Film

STC in partnership with Fan.C (findanative.com), are in search of talent for the “Indigenous Women Through History” series. The series will include stage monologue and/or film and video performances by Indigenous women and supporting actors who will step into character and share compelling stories from the perspective of Indigenous women between the 1600s and present day!

The first casting opportunity includes primary characters Cockacoeske and Matoaka (Pocahontas) as well as supporting roles. Most roles will have speaking parts and will include performances in both traditional regalia and modern clothing.

The first short film may premier at the 8th annual Pocahontas Reframed Film Festival Native Films, Music, Art, and Culture in 2024. The 2024 festival will be held at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture and the Artists Reception at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia. The 2024 festival will also include the second Tsenacommacah Eastern Indian Marketplace. We will also be submitting the film for other festivals.

Popular culture knows Wahunsenacawh’s (Chief Powhatan) daughter by the nickname Pocahontas. In keeping with the PRFF mantra to “reframe Pocahontas“, the first of our film segments will focus on how Matoaka’s life in the early 1600s might have impacted her relative Cockacoeske (Queen of Pamunkey). Cockacoeske had no recourse, during Bacon’s Rebellion, but to broker a form of peace with opposing colonial factions that were each using different methods to remove or subdue Indigenous peoples and occupy the colonies. How might her actions have impacted us today?

Thank you for your interest. We are looking forward to hearing from you.
